Fomo vs Phantom: which should a beginner start with?
fomo is a trading app with a wallet built in; Phantom is a wallet with trading built in. For a first account the practical differences are cost and setup: fomo charges 0.50% per trade on most chains and logs you in with email or Apple ID, while Phantom says its swaps typically cost 0.85% and hands you a recovery phrase to protect. Here is the side-by-side, using only each company's own pages.

What is the difference between fomo and Phantom?
Both are non-custodial on paper, and both let you buy tokens on Solana and Base from a phone. They start from opposite ends, though.
Phantom is a self-custodial wallet first. Its homepage puts it plainly: self-custodial means you control your funds, and Phantom never has access. You install an app or a browser extension, you create a wallet, and you receive a Secret Recovery Phrase that Phantom calls the only way to recover your wallet. Trading is something the wallet does alongside sending, holding and connecting to other apps.
fomo is a trading app first. When you sign up, it creates a wallet for you through Privy, a third-party wallet provider, and you never see a seed phrase. You fund one cash balance and trade on seven chains from it, with a social feed of what other people are buying on the home screen. That combination is what the fomo trading app is built around, and it is why the two products suit different first-time buyers.
How do fomo and Phantom compare side by side?
Every row below comes from the company's own site, checked on 23 September 2026. Where a company does not publish something, the table says so rather than guessing.
| fomo | Phantom | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Social trading app with a built-in wallet | Self-custodial wallet with in-wallet swaps |
| Sign-up | Email or Apple ID; no seed phrase | Create a wallet and store a Secret Recovery Phrase |
| Custody | Non-custodial wallet generated and managed by Privy | Self-custodial; Phantom never has access |
| Trading fee | 0.50% on most chains; Solana tiered; 0.05% on selected major tokens | Typically a flat 0.85% per swap |
| Network fee | Paid by fomo on Solana; paid by you on other chains | Paid by you; gasless Solana swaps deduct a flat fee from the token instead |
| Chains | Solana, Base, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Monad, Robinhood Chain | Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Base, Sui, Monad |
| Buying with cash | Apple Pay, debit card, or USDC on Solana, Base or BNB Chain | Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and bank transfers |
| Platforms | iOS, Android and web | iOS, Android; browser extension for Chrome, Brave and Edge |
| Social features | Feed, follows, leaderboards, trade notifications | Trending tokens and top traders |
| Fee discount | 0.45% instead of 0.50% via a referral link at sign-up | None found on the Phantom pages we checked |
Which is cheaper per trade, fomo or Phantom?
It depends on the order size and the chain, because fomo's Solana schedule is tiered and Phantom's fee is flat. Here is what the published trading fees come to on three common first-trade sizes:
| Trade size | fomo on Solana | fomo on Base | Phantom swap |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $0.50 (2% band), network fee paid by fomo | $0.125 plus network fee | About $0.21 plus network fee |
| $100 | $0.95 flat, network fee paid by fomo | $0.50 plus network fee | $0.85 plus network fee |
| $250 | $1.25 (0.50%), network fee paid by fomo | $1.25 plus network fee | About $2.13 plus network fee |
Three things stand out. Phantom is cheaper on small Solana buys, because fomo's 5 to 47.50 USDC band costs 2%. From roughly $100 upward, fomo's 0.50% undercuts Phantom's 0.85% on every chain. And on Solana, fomo absorbs the network fee, priority fee and token rent, a cost you handle yourself in Phantom unless your swap qualifies for gasless mode (at least $0.30, into a verified token, using the standard swap flow).
Phantom also notes that cross-chain swaps add a bridge provider fee, usually around 0.3%, on top of its 0.85%. fomo does not charge a bridge step because all seven chains trade from the same cash balance. A referral link lowers fomo's standard 0.50% to 0.45%, but only when it is used before the account exists; the details are on the referral code page, and every tier is on the full fomo fee schedule.
Which is easier to set up for a first-time buyer?
fomo, by a clear margin, and that is the product's whole pitch. You log in with email or Apple ID, fund with Apple Pay or a debit card, and buy. fomo can require Face ID to withdraw, to export your key and, if you choose, to open the app. There is nothing to write down and no gas token to buy first. The order that matters is covered in our sign-up walkthrough.
Phantom asks more of you on day one. You create a wallet, then store a recovery phrase somewhere safe and offline, because anyone who has it controls the wallet and nobody can reset it for you. Phantom does make buying easy once the wallet exists, with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and bank transfers listed as ways to buy memecoins. The extra step is not a flaw; it is the price of being your own custodian.
Who holds the keys in fomo and in Phantom?
In Phantom, you do, through the recovery phrase. That gives you full independence and full responsibility.
In fomo, the wallet is generated and managed by Privy. fomo's security article says the key is split using Shamir's Secret Sharing and only reassembled inside secure hardware when a transaction is signed. You can export the private key at any time and use your funds in any compatible wallet, which is the practical test of non-custody. fomo's terms add that the exported key is transmitted to you unencrypted by Privy, so export only on a device you trust. The full picture is in how safe fomo's key setup is and how the fomo wallet handles deposits and export.
Can you use fomo and Phantom together?
Yes. Phantom supports Solana and Base, and fomo accepts USDC deposits on Solana, Base and BNB Chain, so a USDC transfer on Solana or Base works from one to the other. The rules on the fomo side are strict: USDC only, on a supported network, or the transfer can be lost. Our USDC deposit walkthrough has the steps and the test-transfer habit.
Going the other way, fomo lets you withdraw USDC on-chain to another wallet within seconds. fomo says an exported key works in any compatible wallet; we have not tested importing one into Phantom, so treat that as unconfirmed.
Which should you pick?
- Pick fomo if you mainly want to buy and sell tokens from a phone, you do not want to manage a recovery phrase, you trade $100 or more at a time, or you want to see what other traders are buying through the fomo social feed.
- Pick Phantom if you want full self-custody, you plan to connect to other apps from a desktop browser, you hold Bitcoin or Sui, or most of your buys are small Solana trades where the 0.85% flat fee beats fomo's 2% band.
- Check eligibility either way. fomo's terms bar a list of restricted jurisdictions, and its perps are not open to US persons; see where the fomo app works. Phantom also advertises perps; we could not verify who can access them.
Whichever you choose, download it only from the official store listing or website. Lookalike sites that ask you to connect a wallet are a common way people lose funds, and how fomo scams work shows what they look like. Official fomo links are in our fomo app download guide. This page compares products (for a memecoin-only app, see how fomo compares with Moonshot); it is not investment advice, and memecoins can lose all their value.
fomo vs Phantom: common questions
Is fomo cheaper than Phantom?
On the published numbers, usually yes for mid-size and larger trades: fomo charges 0.50% on most chains (0.45% with a referral link) against the flat 0.85% Phantom says its in-wallet swaps typically carry. On Solana, fomo also pays the network fee. The exception is fomo’s Solana band from 5 to 47.50 USDC, where its fee is 2%.
Does fomo give you a seed phrase like Phantom?
No. fomo creates your wallet at sign-up through Privy when you log in with email or Apple ID, so there is no seed phrase to write down. Phantom gives you a Secret Recovery Phrase, which it calls the only way to recover your wallet.
Can I send USDC from Phantom to fomo?
Phantom supports Solana and Base, and fomo accepts USDC deposits on Solana, Base and BNB Chain, so a USDC transfer on Solana or Base lines up on both ends. Send only USDC, match the network on both screens, and try a small test amount first.
Does Phantom have social trading like fomo?
Phantom’s homepage says you can find trending tokens, top traders and apps. fomo is built around a social feed, follows, leaderboards and trade notifications from traders you follow. The difference is emphasis: in fomo the social layer is the main screen, in Phantom it is one feature of a wallet.
Is Phantom or fomo safer for a beginner?
They put the risk in different places. With Phantom, losing the recovery phrase or signing a malicious transaction on a connected site are the main dangers. With fomo, you rely on fomo and Privy’s infrastructure and on keeping your email or Apple ID secure. Neither protects you from buying a token that goes to zero.
