Is fomo trading safe? Custody, keys and real risks
fomo is built so that the company does not hold your crypto: your wallet is non-custodial, created by the wallet provider Privy, with keys split into shares and reassembled only in secure hardware. That covers who controls your funds. It does nothing to stop you buying a token that collapses, sending USDC on the wrong network or falling for a fake site.

Who holds the keys to a fomo wallet?
fomo's Terms of Service state that your wallet is generated and managed by Privy, a third-party wallet infrastructure provider, and that you are solely responsible for safeguarding access to it. fomo's security article, published in March 2026, explains the design:
- Key sharding. Your private key is split into multiple shares using Shamir's Secret Sharing, so no single party holds enough information to reconstruct it.
- Secure hardware. The shares are only reassembled inside trusted execution environments, isolated hardware, at the moment a transaction is signed.
- Face ID. fomo requires Face ID for app access, withdrawals and private key export.
- Export. You can export your private key at any time and use your funds in any compatible wallet, independent of fomo.
What fomo's security does not cover
| Risk | Covered by the wallet design? | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| fomo itself moving your funds | Designed against, per fomo | Export your key and keep it offline if you want an independent backup |
| A token you buy going to zero | No | Size positions as money you can lose |
| USDC sent on an unsupported network | No; can be lost | Use Solana, Base or BNB Chain only, test with a small amount |
| Phishing sites and fake support | No | Only use fomo.family and official store apps; never share a key |
| Someone who gets your exported key | No | Treat an exported key like cash; do not store it in screenshots or chats |
| Losing access to your email or Apple ID | Partly; login depends on it | Secure that account with its own two-factor protection |
One detail from the Terms of Service is worth knowing: when you export your key, it is transmitted to you unencrypted by Privy. That is normal for key export, and it is also why you should only do it on a device you trust. For funding, withdrawals and export step by step, see the fomo wallet guide.
Has fomo been audited?
fomo's security architecture article does not mention a third-party security audit, and we did not find one published on fomo's site when we checked. That does not mean the system is unsafe; it means we cannot point you to independent verification, so we will not claim it. If fomo publishes an audit, we will link it here.
Is fomo a legitimate company?
fomo is operated by FOMO Labs, Inc., a New York company whose Terms of Service are governed by New York law. In June 2026 it announced a $75 million Series B led by Index Ventures, with Union Square Ventures and Benchmark. The real website is fomo.family; our guide to the official fomo family addresses shows how to avoid lookalikes.
Where do fomo users actually lose money?
Mostly in the market, not in the wallet. The app makes it quick to buy trending tokens and to follow what top traders do, and memecoins can drop to nothing within hours. Fees also add up on small Solana orders. Three habits help more than any security feature: size every position as money you can lose, check the chain and network before sending funds, and read the real fee schedule before trading often. For memecoin-specific risks, see trading meme coins on fomo, and for lookalike sites, fake codes and honeypot tokens, see how fomo scams work.
Are there restrictions that protect or exclude you?
fomo's terms bar access from a list of restricted and sanctioned places and prohibit VPN use to circumvent it. Perpetual futures are not available to US persons, and Robinhood Tokens are restricted for US persons and residents of Canada, the UK, Switzerland and other listed jurisdictions. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, read the terms before depositing. Start from our fomo trading overview or the fomo app review if you are still deciding. If you were looking for a FOMO token rather than the app, see fomo crypto.
Fomo safety questions
Is fomo custodial or non-custodial?
fomo describes its wallet as non-custodial. The Terms of Service say the wallet is generated and managed by Privy, a third-party wallet infrastructure provider, and that you are solely responsible for safeguarding access to it.
Can fomo take my funds?
fomo says your key is split into shares so that no single party holds enough to rebuild it, and that it is only reassembled inside secure hardware when a transaction is signed. You can also export the key. We have not audited this ourselves and fomo’s article does not cite an external audit.
What happens to my crypto if fomo shuts down?
fomo’s security article says your assets are stored on the blockchain and controlled by your private key, which you can export and use in any compatible wallet independent of fomo.
Does fomo have a seed phrase?
Not in the traditional sense. You log in with email or Apple ID and can export your private key as a backup. Anyone who can access that exported key can move your funds.
Is fomo safe for beginners?
The account setup is simple and the key model is thoughtfully designed, but most losses on apps like fomo come from the tokens people buy, not from hacks. Start small and treat memecoins as money you can lose.
