Fomo KYC: when fomo asks for ID, and when it does not

One of the first things people ask before installing fomo is whether they will have to upload a passport. The short answer from fomo's own terms: not to sign up and trade tokens, but fomo reserves the right to ask, and one product requires it. Here is exactly where the line sits.

Does fomo require KYC to sign up?

No document check is part of the sign-up flow. fomo creates the account from an email address or Apple ID, and the wallet is generated for you, as described in the sign-up guide. What the Terms of Service add is the right to ask later: fomo may require identity verification or KYC documentation as a condition of accessing perps, and you must provide accurate and complete personal identity information when it is requested.

How old do you have to be?

Eighteen. The terms require you to be over the age of eighteen, or otherwise of legal age to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction, and the App Store lists the app as 18+. There is no age-verification document at sign-up; agreeing to the terms is the representation, which means using the app under eighteen breaches them and puts the account at risk.

What else do you promise when you sign up?

The eligibility section is short and worth knowing, because breaking it is the fastest way to lose access. By using fomo you represent that you are not a restricted person, that your funds do not come from illegal sources, that you have the legal right to transact, and that you comply with the geographic limits on perps and Robinhood Tokens. Which places are excluded is listed on our fomo app countries page.

Can fomo suspend or close your account?

Yes, and the wording is broad: fomo reserves the right to terminate or suspend access at its discretion, without prior notice. The terms name specific triggers, including being a restricted person, referring yourself to claim a reward, manipulating metrics and using circumvention tools such as a VPN to bypass location rules.

There is a practical consequence that makes this less alarming than it sounds. The wallet is non-custodial and your private key can be exported, so losing app access is not the same as losing the funds; how that works is on the fomo wallet guide and in more depth on the fomo safety page.

What this means before you deposit

  1. Expect no ID for normal trading, but do not plan around never being asked.
  2. If you want perps, expect KYC, and remember perps are not available to US persons at all.
  3. Test the exit early. Make one small withdrawal soon after you start, so any verification happens on your schedule.
  4. Keep the account honest. Self-referral is named in the terms as grounds for suspension, so do not try to use your own referral link on a second account.

Fomo KYC questions

Does fomo require KYC?

Not to open an account and trade tokens. fomo’s Terms of Service reserve the right to require identity verification or KYC documentation as a condition of accessing perpetual futures, and say you must give accurate personal identity information when it is requested. So the answer is: not by default, but fomo can ask.

Do you need to be 18 to use fomo?

Yes. The terms require that you are over the age of eighteen, or otherwise of legal age to form a binding contract where you live. The iPhone listing is also rated 18+.

Do I need ID to withdraw from fomo?

fomo says a first bank withdrawal may need extra verification and that larger amounts may be reviewed. It does not publish exactly what documents that involves, so the safe approach is to make a small test withdrawal early rather than when you need the money.

Can I use fomo anonymously?

You sign up with an email address or Apple ID, so there is no document check at the start, but that is not anonymity. Your trades are on public blockchains, fomo holds your account data, and the terms let fomo request identity information or suspend access at its discretion.

Can fomo close my account?

Yes. The terms reserve the right to terminate or suspend access at fomo’s discretion, without prior notice, and list grounds including being a restricted person, self-referral, manipulating metrics and using tools to get around location restrictions.
